Carpet Cleaning and Disinfection, Part 2: What's the Best Way to Clean a Carpet?
Today we’re bringing you Part 2 of our blog series. In today’s post, learn the best way to clean your carpet so you can enjoy it for as long as possible and preserve its texture and appearance. Here’s a tip we want to share with you right off the bat: Less is often more, and not every new cleaning trend is better than tried-and-true methods.
Vacuuming and Brushing
Regular vacuuming is an effective way to remove surface and coarse dirt from the fibers of your carpet. When vacuuming, be sure to move in the direction of the pile. For delicate carpets, you can also brush the carpet with a soft brush. This helps prevent dust and dirt from accumulating and avoids premature wear on your carpet. Hard and rotating brushes must be avoided at all costs and should not be used, as they can pull out threads, and pulled-out fibers can create holes in the carpet.
Water and mild soapy water
Now it’s time to remove the stains from the carpet. If you’re dealing with a standard stain, you’ll get the best results by dissolving liquid soap in lukewarm water. For special stains, in addition to specific cleaning products, there are also tried-and-true home remedies that we’ve already discussed in a previous blog post. First, prepare your cleaning solution. Use a clean household cloth to wipe down the carpet. Wring it out thoroughly and make sure not too much liquid soaks into the carpet. Afterward, let the carpet dry completely.
Alternative Wet Vacuums
If you’d rather not rely on home remedies for stubborn stains and would prefer to use a device to help, carpet cleaners are a good alternative. They clean carpets deep into the fibers and effectively absorb excess liquid. However, they don’t work equally well on all materials. Therefore, before using one, find out which carpet fibers it’s safe to use on. The principle behind the carpet cleaner is simple: it sprays water and detergent onto the carpet and then sucks them—along with the dirt—back out of the fibers.
Steam Cleaning
Steam cleaning allows for a particularly thorough cleaning. Since the steam, which reaches temperatures of up to 180 degrees, also kills germs and dust mites, steam cleaning has a disinfecting effect. The steam penetrates deep into the carpet fibers, allowing even stubborn and deep-seated dirt to be removed. It also eliminates unpleasant odors. By the way, steam cleaning is a chemical-free cleaning method. However, delicate carpet fibers often cannot tolerate it. To prevent damage to your carpet, be sure to read the care instructions before cleaning.
