Carpet Cleaning and Disinfection, Part 1: Different Materials

It’s not just during the COVID-19 pandemic that it’s important to care for carpets properly and maintain the quality of their materials. We’re interested in how to properly disinfect surfaces and in which situations it actually makes sense to do so. That’s why we at outlet-teppiche.de have decided to launch a blog series that addresses exactly these questions. Let’s start with an overview of the materials carpets are made of and their properties.

What materials is a carpet made of?

Synthetic Fibers
Synthetic fibers are popular in carpet manufacturing because they offer many design options and are also dimensionally stable, durable, and easy to care for. Synthetic fibers such as viscose, polyester, polypropylene, and polyacrylic have a unique surface structure that, thanks to their properties, is quite flexible and enables modern carpet designs. Synthetic fibers are lightfast, have high color quality, and provide thermal insulation. As a result, synthetic fiber carpets are often found not only in living rooms but also in bathrooms, outdoor spaces, and children’s rooms.

Natural Fibers
Carpets made from natural fibers are growing in popularity. Natural fibers come from animals, as is the case with wool or silk. However, they can also be of plant origin. The most commonly used plant-based fibers are sisal, jute, and hemp. The natural look of the fibers, their durability, and their resistance to dirt and moisture are characteristics that set natural-fiber rugs apart and contribute significantly to their success.

Wool
Wool yarns are often used in carpet manufacturing. They are quite resistant to moisture and dirt, conduct heat very well, and create a pleasant atmosphere in a room. Wool is a renewable raw material that impresses with its texture and unique character, bringing a sense of coziness to any room. Wool rugs are particularly popular in living rooms and bedrooms. However, thanks to their sound-absorbing properties, they are also often found in entryways and hallways.

Modal
Modal is a carpet fiber that has been gaining increasing attention recently. Modal is a high-quality fiber derived from beech wood. It is biodegradable and is considered an innovative synthetic fiber of natural origin. Modal is derived from cellulose and produced using a mechanical spinning process. Modal has an attractive appearance, but above all, it is robust, durable, and breathable. It retains its shape well, is heat-resistant, and can be washed in the washing machine.
