How do you find the right carpet sizes?

Finding the right rug size for your space isn't always easy—after all, there are quite a few things to consider. We've put together some practical tips and information here to help you determine the right size, shape, and placement for your new rug.

Basic Tips for Choosing Rug Sizes

When you start choosing the right rug, it’s important to keep in mind the basic guidelines for selecting the right size. First, consider the size of your room and your furniture. It’s also particularly important to ensure that doors can open freely. A thicker pile could get in the way here.

  • Consider doors

Rug Sizes by Room—An Overview

To create the ideal overall look that harmonizes your furniture with your rug, it’s important to follow a specific layout. Since smaller rugs tend to be framed by your furniture, while larger rugs should partially disappear beneath it, here’s an overview to help you determine the right rug size for your space. The dimensions of your furniture and the size of your room play a major role in this.

A rug placed under a dining table should be large enough so that the back legs of the chairs ALWAYS rest on the rug. The correct seating position is upright, one hand’s width away from the table. In a dining room, it’s recommended to place a rug under the table to dampen noise in the room, but also to add more color, pattern, and texture to the space. The rug should extend at least 75 cm beyond the edge of the table. The ideal size is therefore at least 1.50 m longer or wider than the table. The rug’s proportions should be tailored to the table. It should also be larger than the table so that chairs can be pulled back easily without their back legs sliding off the rug. Since the center of the rug is hidden by the table and chairs, the design of its edges is particularly important.

Use these tips to perfectly incorporate your new rug into your dining room:

  • First, buy the table, arrange the chairs accordingly, and then make sure to measure the rug carefully! — The rug must be at least 75 cm larger than the table on all sides.
  • This applies to round, square, and rectangular rugs in the dining room

The Perfect Rug Size for the Living Room

Rugs are very commonly used in living rooms. Here, too, there are a few simple guidelines regarding size and shape.

  1. Place the rug in the center of the furniture arrangement—in front of the sofa and armchair. It should be wider than your furniture pieces and placed not too far from the seating area.
  2. With this arrangement, the rug is placed under the front half of your furniture; only the front legs rest on the rug. Not suitable for cabinets and tables—otherwise, they would be crooked.
  3. Another option: Choose a rug that's large enough to accommodate all your furniture. There should be just enough space around each piece so that they don't look crammed together.

Tip! There are certain pieces of furniture that work well with all three layouts. If the sofa or armchair has freestanding legs and there is space between the floor and the seat, it’s best to place the rug so that half of it is under the piece of furniture. If the sofa is very close to the floor, has a base that extends all the way to the floor, or has a continuous metal strip instead of legs, it should either stand entirely on the rug or next to it.

The Perfect Rug Size for the Bedroom

Rugs are also commonly found in bedrooms. There are several options here—you can place the rug under the bed, use it to cover another area of the floor, or put it near the bed so you have a soft rug under your feet when you get out of bed. With rugs in the bedroom, you can create a cozy atmosphere in no time!

The Perfect Rug Size for a Child's Room

Colorful children's room rugs not only look pretty, but they also serve a practical purpose. These rugs help absorb noise and dust in the children's room. They dampen footfall and ambient noise, creating a cozy and child-friendly environment. In addition, rugs provide a pleasantly soft surface for playing, running around, and lounging.

Rectangular or round children's room rugs:
Like small islands, round rugs—as well as runners—can create a cozy atmosphere anywhere in the children’s room. A floor that feels cool quickly turns into a warm little spot. Rugs help create play areas and cozy nooks in the children’s room...

The Perfect Rug Size for the Hallway

Your entryway is the calling card for your entire home. It’s the first room your guests enter when they come to visit you. A beautifully designed entryway shows who you are and how you live.

Round Hallway:
A large, spacious hallway—for example, one that’s roughly square in shape—gains even more glamour with a round rug. When positioned correctly, it not only creates the right look but also helps warm up a cold floor.

Hallway Rugs:
Long, narrow hallways look their best with runners. This makes your hallway feel inviting and super stylish.

Rugs for Your Favorite Spots

Round rugs, in particular, are well-suited for creating special spaces—this allows you to divide your rooms into different areas with minimal effort and create a personalized atmosphere.
