Carpet Cleaning and Disinfection, Part 3: Do I Need to Disinfect My Carpet?

Today you’ll read the final part of our blog series, which explores the question of to what extent disinfecting carpets is actually useful and necessary. Basically, it’s important to distinguish between the different ways carpets are used and the locations where they’re installed.

The risk of infection associated with a carpet depends, to a certain extent, on how it is used and where it is located. For example, cleaning a carpet in a child’s bedroom at home should be assessed differently than cleaning a carpet used in a daycare center. Because children play on the carpet—combined with the large number of children and their young age—the risk of a virus being transmitted via hands and saliva on a daycare center carpet is significantly higher than in a private setting. Accordingly, stricter guidelines and regulations for cleaning and hygiene apply here.

As mentioned in Part 2 of our blog series, there are cleaning methods that have a disinfecting effect and can also be easily performed at home. For example, short-pile carpets can be cleaned using steam cleaning or a wet vacuum. In this process, dirt is loosened using a hot cleaning solution or steam and then mechanically removed by suction. This helps reduce germs and microbial contamination. However, these two cleaning methods are not considered standardized or tested disinfection procedures and are more commonly used in private settings.

In the commercial sector, there are many guidelines and regulations regarding the cleaning and disinfection of carpets. Provided that the carpet’s material and installation allow it (many commercial carpets are permanently installed), a chemical cleaning method can be used. In this case, the disinfectant should be tested and approved by the Robert Koch Institute and have both antibacterial and virucidal properties. The decision on whether to disinfect a carpet at home is up to each individual. Gentle cleaning methods that also have a disinfecting effect can be easily carried out at home. However, even thorough, regular cleaning and following basic hygiene practices—such as taking off outdoor shoes before entering the home—can minimize health risks from the start.
