The Holi Festival: Joyful Colors Everywhere
The Origins of the Holi Festival
The Holi Festival originated in India and is celebrated on the first day of the full moon in the month of Phalgun (in February or March according to our calendar) to mark the beginning of spring and the victory of good over evil. The festival has Hindu roots and is one of the oldest and most traditional festivals in India. People celebrate in the streets for at least two days, marking the end of winter and welcoming the beginning of spring. In some regions of India, the festival even lasts up to ten days. In Germany, the Holi Festival is best known for revelers sprinkling each other with colorful powder, listening to music, and splashing each other with colored water. The colored powder, called “gulal”—which, according to legend, dates back to the god Krishna—is traditionally made from flowers, roots, or herbs that have healing properties. These special ingredients are consecrated on an altar and blessed with prayers for good fortune. The Holi Festival thus also has spiritual roots, which certainly contributes to its appeal.
A Bath of Colors
In Varanasi, India’s holiest and one of its oldest cities, the vibrant colors of the Holi Festival transform even the Ganges River into a sea of color. At the end of the festival, revelers bathe in the river to wash the colors off their bodies. What a spectacle it is when the waters of the Ganges shimmer in the evening with shades of pink, violet, red, blue, green, orange, and more...
The Effect of Colors
Colors bring joy into our lives and touch us emotionally. Every color has its own unique character and a special effect. Colors evoke associations and trigger certain feelings. Red, for example, is a color that magically captivates us from the very first moment. Yellow adds fresh accents and represents spring, sunshine, and a zest for life—it’s a symbol of everything we long for in these times. Blue lets our minds wander into the distance, transporting us to the sea or other magical places. Colors simply make us happy and give us a sense of security.
